Project 03 — Cacao Leather Goods

de'Finnitive Pods

The 70%
everyone throws away.

Cacao pod husks transformed into biodegradable leather, handcrafted by Thai artisans into goods that give farmers a second income from the same crop.

The Problem

The 70% everyone throws away.

To ferment cacao, only the white pulp inside the pod is used. That pulp is just 30% of the fruit. The remaining 70% — the pod husk — is almost always thrown away.

We wanted to change that. We partnered with a cacao cooperative in rural Thailand that developed a proprietary method to transform cacao pod husks into a sustainable, fully biodegradable leather-like material. It is strong, workable, and genuinely beautiful.

de'Finnitive Pods works with local Thai leathermakers and artisans to handcraft consumer products rooted in Thai craftsmanship and cultural identity. Every product creates income for farmers and artisans at the same time.

70%

of each cacao fruit has always been thrown away. Until now.

How It Works

Simple. Circular. Scalable.

01

Connect farmers to waste buyers

We partner with cacao farmers and fermentors across Thailand and directly connect them to our leather cooperative, who purchases the discarded pod husks.

02

Train and process at the source

We teach cooperatives how to prepare and process the waste material so it can be sold at higher value, giving farmers a second income stream from the same crop.

03

Transform into leather

Our partner uses their proprietary method to convert the husks into cacao leather, then passes the material to our network of Thai artisan leathermakers.

04

Craft and bring to market

Thai craftspeople design and handmake artisanal products — from OTOP Ratchaburi keychains to hand-drawn artwork leather pieces — and we bring them to market globally.

The Material

Cacao leather. Made from waste.

The cacao pod husk is one of the most underused agricultural byproducts in the world. Most of it rots on the ground or gets burned. Our partner cooperative in rural Thailand developed a proprietary process to turn it into a leather-like material that is strong, flexible, and fully biodegradable.

It is not a synthetic imitation. It is a natural material created from something that was already there, that was always going to be there, and that no one else thought to use.

Made from what everyone else throws away.

Every product is handcrafted by Thai artisans using cacao pod leather — the material we recover from the 70% of the fruit that used to end up on the ground. All pieces are handmade. No two are identical.
